4 App Design Trends You Should Know About

Apps are big news for most companies these days. More apps are helping people do everyday things more quickly and easily, and innovations are introducing new capabilities beyond people’s wildest imagination.

As customer interest in apps increases, so too does companies’. More businesses see having a customer-facing app as an important aspect of customer service. Others are looking internally and discovering how custom apps could help them work more efficiently and effectively, take advantage of competitive advantages, and deliver better experiences to their customers. 

Increasingly, more businesses are investing in apps. Whether it’s an app for internal use or a customer-facing one, you need to know about these four trends in app design.

1. Storytelling

Humans are storytellers by nature. From books to movies to television, people enjoy telling and engaging in stories. Educators have experimented with using storytelling as a device to more effectively teach students. The good news: It works. Storytelling is often more effective than delivering the straight facts to people. They retain more information and become more emotionally invested in the outcome. 

You might not think of teaching someone how to use an app as a moment for storytelling, but it is. Even the app’s primary functions can be wrapped up in elements of storytelling. Since telling a story is such an effective method, it’s little wonder it’s become one of the leading elements of app design today.

2. Animation

How do you tell a story within your app? Many designers are incorporating media-rich features such as high-resolution images, interactive text, and animations to craft compelling narratives for their app users. 

Animation is perhaps the most popular of these techniques. In fact, it’s one of the top app design trends right now. Animations are used to illustrate and demonstrate, and to advance narratives. 

Animations can do things still images and text can’t, such as illustrate how a user can complete an action or demonstrate motion. Animation also creates interest and captures users’ attention, resulting in more interaction and a better experience.

3. Microservices

Both animation and storytelling focus on the user interface and the app’s front-end. The back-end of operations, however, is where all the heavy lifting is done. Without the back-end, the app is effectually useless.

Apps were once more labour-intensive to produce as developers would write code from scratch to create new apps. With API accessibility improving and innovators delivering pre-written code for much of the back-end, apps are now easier than ever to develop.

Most developers love microservices since they eliminate the need to write every element of the app from scratch. Instead, they can take prebuilt codes and plug them in, speeding the development of the app and delivering proven functionality every time. There’s no need to reinvent the wheel every time the app needs an update!

4. Multi-Cloud Management

The cloud is being adopted by more businesses and individual users than ever before. As popularity increases, many are finding there are advantages to using multiple cloud services.

While there are advantages, this tactic can also introduce a number of headaches. Since assets and information are scattered across different services and servers, you can suddenly have a huge issue if one server goes awry.

As this situation continues to evolve, app developers have been adopting management tools designed to address the multi-cloud reality. These management tools do things like ensure information is backed up to several places, preventing problems if one location should become unavailable.

The assets can then be managed across multiple cloud services, streamlining workloads and optimizing resources.

Designing for the Future

Of course, app design trends will continue to evolve and change. These are the important ones to keep an eye on for most app developers today.
